Chapter Twenty-one

Alex felt exhilarated as he got into work that day. He’d spent the majority of the past few nights gathering more material on the awful cauldrons, and Pritchard had agreed that they’d talk to Jeff about it. He clearly had insight, and both Alex and Pritchard appreciated that.

Kaleb sat on the sofa in Alex’s office when Alex entered. “Good morning, Kaleb. How long have you been here?”

“Half an hour. Dr. Soya called about an authentication of a painting. Doesn’t look good.”

“From the Terrence collection?” Alex hurried to Kaleb who held out a file.

“Sorry.”

“Dammit. That puts the whole collection in doubt.” Alex flipped through the file. “I’d hoped to have time to show Jeff the cauldron file this morning, but now both Pritchard and I need to look through everything.”

“I still need to help Jeff with the files I messed up yesterday.”

“I thought you did that yesterday.”

“Yeah, but he got a call. He needed his privacy.”

“Then you can talk to him about the cauldrons.”

“Okay.” Kaleb picked up his tablet. “I’ve scheduled a meeting with Dr. Soya at eleven, and I had the Terrence collection isolated in bay three.”

Alex turned to stare at Kaleb. “You foresaw our need for both?”

Kaleb flashed a proud smile. “Collective memories kicked in when she called.”

Alex laughed and stepped up to squeeze Kaleb’s arm. “You’re amazing, Kaleb. Now I won’t even ask if you can get more on the cauldrons out of Jeff because apparently, you’re an awesome assistant who knows how to gather what we need.”

“Okay, I’ll set up the meeting with the head of the Griffith collection for Monday at lunch and tell Monica.”

“If Pritchard forgets to tell you that you’re doing well, let me fill in his blanks. I’ll go tell Pritchard our plans for today, and you can pick up my slack.” Alex handed Kaleb the file on the cauldrons and offered up an apologetic smile.

Kaleb chuckled. “I’ll take care of it.” Kaleb’s phone went off, and he picked up. “Kaleb Watcher... Hello, Ms. Harris, yes... Yes, Mr. Browman is still interested in viewing those two pieces...”

Alex smiled and left Kaleb to do his job. He was so proud of him. He and Pritchard had talked about what to expect from Kaleb, and apparently, the effect of the shared memories was not something they could have taken into account. Still, Alex prepared himself for Kaleb messing up, because even though he had numerous Earned to help him, he was going to make mistakes and drop the ball.

Pritchard sat behind his desk talking on the phone when Alex entered without knocking. Pritchard offered a smile before he went back to the “Aha... aha... sure... aha... no, of course not... sure...”

Alex smothered a grin and snatched a juice from the minibar.

“So when will it be done?”

Alex paid attention after that.

“Are you telling me you can’t finish it on time because some idiot has sent you threats if you work on building our auction house? Okay... Well, I’ll send over a representative to help you figure it out.
